The Lake District

For me, the English Lakes have been a joy to visit and photograph since I was a youngster, with a charm that survives the changing weather. Wrap up well, be prepared to climb, and enjoy!

The view above is of the southern end of Buttermere, leading up towards Honister Pass.

In March, with snow on the tops, it's a most beautiful part of the country, especially if you head for high ground. Just in case you wonder whether I actually do a bit of walking myself, or get others to photograph the mountains for me, here's your proof - old git (of a few years ago) on the top!

The view westwards from just north of Keswick.

Looking back across Derwent Water with Keswick on the left in the distance.

Trees casting long, winter shadows, beside Derwent Water.

snow

I love the sense of space as you ascend, and the crispness of the chilly air.

tops

I'm grateful for good weather; wouldn't want to be up here in a storm.

rocks

Sitting to eat sandwiches by a stream could well become my most popular form of meditation!

Tarn Howes under a typical Lake District sky!

Back in the 1960s I had a reasonable crop of hair (see 'About Me') and carried a little Exa camera and tripod. This photograph, taken by my father on the top of Honister Pass, is reproduced from a yet-to-be-cleaned-up slide.

The locals are generally friendly, but over attentive if you are spotted with a picnic.
